My understanding of Wayfinding is this:
A person in a specific situation is motivated to go somewhere because they have a want or need. Wayfinding is the process of this person acquiring what they want or need. For example, my group created a situation where it is raining out side , and design student (girl) needs to make it from the union bookstore to the spencer museum of art . However, the design student wants to make it across the street without ruining the project she is carrying. The problem we need a solution for is that not many students know to use the underground tunnel between the two buildings. It is located off in a corner with no signs or arrows giving direction. Either today or Monday, I plan to take pictures of the area as well as observe how many people use the tunnel as it is. Then I will wait and observe if more people start using the tunnel after a sign or tape is placed visibly to give them some direction. My group members (Madi, Alec, and Voranouth) are also doing similar tests. For example, Madi's boyfriend has never even seen the tunnel so she is going to bring him down there and see if he can find it on his own. Should be interesting.
