Just Breathe

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

My New Obsession

Why are my new obsessions always costly??????????

I do this new fun thing called designing t-shirts. which wouldn't be bad if i was designing them for OTHER people to buy and not myself. At least one of them was a gift. . . and my most recent one is for my group called the "night crawlers", that I will be running with in a 5K on june 4th! it is a walk/race called the Firefly Run benefitting the Children's Medical Center of Dallas. The neat thing about it is that it is at 830 at night, so everyone will be dressed in bright colors from head to toe and accessorized in LED flashing lights! canNOT wait!!!!

Here is my Firefly Run shirt! My group of about 6 or 7 likes it at least!

Here are some images of my tshirt designs from Uberprints.

Sitting in Context

SO this is my chair! or as I like to call it, my throne!
Took about 2 days to make! I am looking extremely tired in this picture, but at least my chair didn't break apart when i sat on it!!!!! success.

Life is Like a Box of Crayons

“Life is like a box of crayons. Most people are the 8-color boxes, but what you're really looking for are the 64-color boxes with the sharpeners on the back. I fancy myself to be a 64-color box, though I've got a few missing. It's ok though, because I've got some more vibrant colors like periwinkle at my disposal. I have a bit of a problem though in that I can only meet the 8-color boxes. Does anyone else have that problem? I mean there are so many different colors of life, of feeling, of articulation.. so when I meet someone who's an 8-color type.. I'm like, "hey girl, magenta!" and she's like, "oh, you mean purple!" and she goes off on her purple thing, and I'm like, "no - I want magenta!"
- John Mayer

Personally, I would rather be a 120 box of crayons. My color of choice is Razzmatazz Red after my favorite JambaJuice smoothie. What's your color?

From the Crayola Website:

Personality Traits
achiever, intense, competitive
Cultural Meanings
In India, red represents a soldier.
Fun Facts
Red is a stimulant in the healing process. It increases blood flow and energizes the body. To paint the town red means to celebrate and party. If you dream of the color red, it is a warning to calm your temper.

Looking back. . . and trying to look forward.

I had a lot of fun with the treehouse project even though it was kind of a love/hate thing. . . still, i feel accomplished. I am going back to Dallas for break and will use this time to RELAX, spend time with my family, read some vampire books, think of awesome idea's for this next experience/book project, and try to feel good about pushing forward. On the 20th of February my friend Hayden Hartnett passed away. I met her freshman year of highschool. . . right away we were best friends and partners in crime. we got into SO much trouble together. . . for instance, all in one night, we had gotten Fake IDs (at age 15 mind you), got our belly buttons pierced, snuck out, got caught, got our phones taken away, and got busted for both the Fakes AND the piercing because my mom went through our phones. Needless to say she has given me the most awesome memories and everyone who ever knew her can say the same. HERE is an article I found from her college's newspaper. She was studying visual art at Fordham College with a focus in photography. For more than just her talent, for her strength, her ability to make you fall in love with anything, the way i'll never EVER feel bad about eating donuts because she told me "they're basically just sugar and air, so they don't count" hahah... so Hayden.... the things she could come up with... she will truly always be an inspiration to me.

There was nobody more beautiful.

“Love is stronger than death even though it can't stop death from happening, but no matter how hard death tries it can't separate people from love. It can't take away our memories either.”

I plan on celebrating Spring Break with a Snow Cone today from Tad's. . . Nobody loved snow cones more than Hayden. And if you're reading this, YOU should go get one too! - b/c she would have convinced you otherwise.

A little reminder of why a college degree is important. . .

Remember those signs that the Kansas Union wanted us to make?--In addition to the ones they agreed to let us hang up for our project? WELL. . . . when my group and I brought all of our laminated, finished work up to the Marketing office and shared it with the Director. . . (to cut to the chase), we got our $h!t handed to us, kindly of course, lol.... but it was a major eye opener to a lot of different aspects of the professional world... and the lack of freedom we actually have. For instance, the Jayhawk i found on google images is not the NEWEST version (the KU is in a diff font), no purple is allowed anywhere-- not even for a legend on a map, KU signs have to have all the same font, they should all be the same color for designated areas, parking lots are referred to by lot number, and somehow we misspelled a word? Anyways all of these things he noticed within like a minute so YEAH.... that's that. It was a good learning experience and I know I certainly won't ever overlook the regulations a place might have or other basic common sense things again.....
On the other side of things, the University's Sign Regulations are kind of disappointing because it limits creativity for actual changes that could be helpful for wayfinding. BUT...for our project's purpose, everything we did is just fine (minus the type-o) although it does make since not to have purple anywhere on KU's stuff.... heck, I don't even wear purple on campus. . . . should have thought of that one!

COUNTDOWN: 3 days

My 21st Birthday is this Saturday!!!!

Clearly I am excited... which is why i must take time away from this blog post to go read Bright Minds, Beautiful Ideas  and write my essay before the weekend gets here.

But first....

Quick note on the wayfinding project: things are going GREAT! Our signs for the Underground Kansas Union Tunnel are laminated and ready to be hung up on thursday. However, two other signs we created, as per request, might be permanent-- which is awesome... but we just need to see how the funds for the prints will be handled considering the images are quite large.

Project 1: Wayfinding

My understanding of Wayfinding is this:

A person in a specific situation is motivated to go somewhere because they have a want or need. Wayfinding is the process of this person acquiring what they want or need. For example, my group created a situation where it is raining out side , and design student (girl) needs to make it from the union bookstore to the spencer museum of art . However, the design student wants to make it across the street without ruining the project she is carrying. The problem we need a solution for is that not many students know to use the underground tunnel between the two buildings. It is located off in a corner with no signs or arrows giving direction. Either today or Monday, I plan to take pictures of the area as well as observe how many people use the tunnel as it is. Then I will wait and observe if more people start using the tunnel after a sign or tape is placed visibly to give them some direction. My group members (Madi, Alec, and Voranouth) are also doing similar tests. For example, Madi's boyfriend has never even seen the tunnel so she is going to bring him down there and see if he can find it on his own. Should be interesting.

Here Goes Nothing

Not sure how I feel about having to write on an online blog twice a week. I wasn't enrolled in BDS 101 because it was full so this is completely new to me and I'm used to my thoughts being private. But, perhaps, MAYBE this does actually help in the creative process/understanding of this class. We shall see.
